Welcome To Something To Ad.

See the source imageIt has been a hobby of mine for quite a while to pick apart advertisements, primarily on TV.  Now I am no professional advertiser, and I have no real claim to any expertise in the field. However I do notice some glaring issues in a lot of today’s commercials, mostly the ones on television.  I know that there is a lot of money that goes into these, and that focus groups and communications majors pour over them for hours.  Sometimes the goal of the Ad is very specific and the details don’t much matter. I however enjoy the details, the minute points of the spot.  The amount of production value that goes into the one minute clips is astronomical, why not make sure they are done well.

Most of my gripes are about the “you thought we wouldn’t notice, but we did” portions of the narrative in the clip, but also sometimes just missed marks, or things that are probably too clever for the casual viewer.  I have found in talking to people that the subtle points get missed, most people don’t focus on the commercials.  Sometimes this lack of focus works in the favor of the advertiser, other times it leads to the missing of key points.

This blog series will be a bit experimental to see how many people have time on their hands and are willing to read my rantings about the anachronisms in commercials for pointless consumer goods.  So thank you for getting this far into it. I look forward to you reading the first few sentences, saying “honestly get a hobby” and closing out on the blogs in the future!
